George Romero Remaking Peeping Tom?
Posted By : jmh314, Sunday Jun,29 Filed Under : General Horror, Alright, this whole thing is about to keep the rumor mill burning a little and we'll have to keep an ear out for how it develops. A while back, I heard a whisper that George Romero was interested in remaking Peeping Tom (1960). This really peaked my interest at the time as I love the original and was intrigued that he would be interested in this project. So I tucked it in the back of my head and was going to wait til I heard more to report anything This weekend I was honored to get to meet George Romero as he made his rounds on the NOTLD 40th Anniversary Tour. I gave the normal praise of his films that I am sure most fans give and smiled for a quick picture. As I finished up I remembered that rumor just threw it out there and asked "Did I hear you are remaking Peeping Tom?" George was a little caught off guard and chuckled. He told me he was amazed that I asked that because he didnt think that info has gotten out yet as nothing is official. Romero then took a few moments to tell me the story that yes, Peeping Tom is a film he would be interested in remaking and is trying to acquire the rights to do so. He said Peeping Tom Director Michael Powell was an inspiration to him in becoming a filmmaker and he would love the chance to update Peeping Tom. He stated he was able to become good friends with Michael Powell but was also friends with Michaels wife Thelma Schoonmaker after he was introduced to Thelma by Martin Scorsese. Michael Powell passed away in 1990 but Romero has remained friends with Thelma since then. She has the rights to the film and Romero said that he has been talking with her to get the rights to remake it and said he doesnt want to compleltey redo a classic but thinks it can be updated to be just as creepy for modern times. He reiterated that nothing is official but it is something he would like to pursue if it all comes together. So there you have it. I just thought it was too interesting of a story to not pass along especially because he seemed generally happy in pursuing the project. Again this is all UNOFFICIAL right now as he doesnt even have the rights to the film but it sounds like if he is able to secure them that he's all for it. I for one think it would be a very interesting project if this indeed does all happen. I guess we'll have to keep our ear to the ground for any movement on this one as time goes by.
